Tails & Tires, An Action-Packed Match

Our award-winning summer dog sledding tour has met its match! We are excited to announce our new Tails & Tires Package, which began with a soft launch this month. The package deal encompasses the best of Alaskan summer activities and a half-day of adventure, all from one location. The combo tour pairs our popular Summer Sled Ride with our brand-new ATV Adventure.

For years, our guests have seen us riding our All Terrain Vehicles (or ATVs) around the property and asked about taking one for a spin. These machines play an important role in our daily lives; not only do they help us haul goods around the property (dog food, firewood, scrap lumber), but we also use them to groom the trails for our summer tours. By dragging a groomer tool behind the ATV, we can create the smoothest trail possible for our dogs and guests. In addition, we use the machines to zip around the trails ahead of a tour, scanning for wildlife and potential hazards, like fallen trees, that may obstruct our path with the dog team.

Now, our guests can experience another aspect of life at the kennel, by trying their own hand at driving an ATV. Our guided ATV Adventure takes guests beyond our Summer Sled Ride trails, to additional private training trails on the property, as well as the surrounding forrest and creeks. Along the way, the guide (usually Matthew), points out the local flora and fauna, ripening berries, and chaga, a special fungus that grows on birch trees and is used for medicinal purposes.

He also explains how he reads the trail for animal activity during his training with the dogs, and shows guests remnants of recent bear and moose activity on the property. Guests will roll down to a nearby creek where we have often spotted bears fishing for salmon from afar. The two-hour adventure also includes a snack on the back of the machines, and breathtaking views of Denali.

Overall, the tour offers guests the chance to go beyond our summer carts and experience another essential part of life with sled dogs. By driving their own ATV on a guided nature trek, they’ll be scanning the trail for wildlife and stepping into the mindset of a musher.
